David Morris - Mykonos 2024

The inspiration of this celebratory object is taken from the complex play of energy, matter and space that ends in the ballet of colour that we see as the Aurora Borealis. Starting as a solar flare on the sun’s surface, the energy transverses the vast tracts of starlit space to reach earth and encounters the magnetic shield that surrounds and protects us and causes the brilliant ribbons of light that inspired the Skye Collection of London’s most famous jeweller.

This dish is both a beautiful object in its own right and a receptacle for the wonderful jewels of the Skye Collection. Just as the rare precious metals gold, silver and platinum are forged in the heart of a dying star, this piece feels like it exploded from the surface of the sun and was frozen in time. The object functions broadly as a dish and has multiple textures and surfaces from which to hold and display precious items. Black clay with a copper based glaze that produces an intense blue, petrol, speckled finish inspired by the night sky.
